Every Official State Flower: All 50 States in One List

Every state has an official flower, and together they make the prettiest list in state trivia. But the list is also a trap: several flowers belong to more than one state, one is not a flower at all, and one is currently changing. Learn the shared ones first and the rest of the list falls into place.

Here is the full list, plus the shared flowers and the odd cases to watch for in a quiz.

Flowers shared by more than one state

The violet is the most shared state flower, claimed by four states: Illinois, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin, where it is the wood violet. After that, several flowers are shared by two states each. Arkansas and Michigan both chose the apple blossom. Kentucky and Nebraska both chose goldenrod. Louisiana and Mississippi both chose the magnolia. Connecticut and Pennsylvania both chose mountain laurel. Iowa and North Dakota both chose the wild prairie rose. North Carolina and Virginia both chose the flowering dogwood.

So when a quiz asks for a state flower, never assume one flower means one state. The violet alone could be four different answers.

The flower that is changing

Georgia’s flower is in transition. Older official lists name the Cherokee Rose, and that is still the answer most quizzes expect. But newer lists name the sweetbay magnolia instead, and the Georgia Senate approved the change in March 2026. The final enactment is not confirmed yet, so treat Georgia’s flower as unsettled for now rather than a fixed quiz answer.

The ones that are not quite flowers

Maine’s entry is the strangest on the list: the white pine cone and tassel is a cone, not a blossom at all. Nevada picked sagebrush, a hardy shrub rather than a garden flower. And Arizona’s saguaro cactus blossom is a real flower, just not the kind anyone plants in a flower bed. These are the entries that catch quiz players who only picture petals.
